Gulmarg Convention Centre: CM Abdullah Aims to Make It Asian Davos

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, envisioning it as a platform for international events akin to an Asian Davos. The event took place in the picturesque hill station of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, with a spotlight on promoting tourism and boosting local economy.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the NBCC, the Gulmarg Convention Centre aims to foster cultural, business, and conference tourism in the region. Senior officials, including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani and Additional Chief Secretary Tourism Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma, were present for the inauguration.

Importance of Infrastructure in Tourism

During the unveiling, Abdullah stressed the significance of not just building structures but also ensuring their maintenance and effective utilization. He noted, “It is the easiest thing to build four walls. The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance.”

Although the project was completed on time, Abdullah pointed out that the furnishing component was missing and is currently being finalized to make the Centre operational immediately.

Positioning Gulmarg as a MICE Destination

Abdullah emphasized the need to market the Gulmarg Convention Centre as a key hub for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, weddings, and high-profile events. He stated, “We are considering linking it with SKICC’s marketing network so the Centre can be promoted as part of a broader package.”

His vision includes hosting annual events that attract global participation, hoping to see more than just visitors—he aspires for a recognition equivalent to that of the elite Swiss Davos.

Enhancing Tourist Experience in Gulmarg

The Chief Minister also revealed plans for the Ski Hire Shop development by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, further bolstering the local tourism infrastructure. Abdullah noted the need for recreational activities during evenings, especially in winter months when tourists need more engagement after daytime skiing and sightseeing.

“This facility can change that. By setting up a coffee shop, restaurant, and a digital cinema projection system, we can ensure tourists have vibrant evening experiences,” he remarked. This initiative is aimed at not just enhancing visitor satisfaction but also generating revenue for the local economy.

Utilizing Facilities for Government Activities

In his address, Abdullah urged various government departments to utilize the convention centre for meetings and training programs until private interest grows. He highlighted sectors such as education and health as potential users, emphasizing the Centre’s role in fostering interaction.

“Holding programs here will ensure optimum use while offering participants a refreshing change of location,” he added.

Conclusion: A Landmark Addition to Gulmarg’s Tourism

Omar Abdullah congratulated the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority for the successful completion of this landmark project. Describing the Gulmarg Convention Centre as a potential epicenter for international gatherings and cultural events, he expressed hope for proper management to make it a vibrant tourist hub.

With strategic planning and investment in recreational facilities, the government aims to not only transform Gulmarg’s tourism profile but also redefine it as a global and cultural destination.
