Telangana Techie Shot Dead by US Police After Altercation

Telangana Techie Mohammed Nizamuddin Shot by US Police

Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 30-year-old tech professional from Mahabubnagar, Telangana, was shot dead by police in Santa Clara, California, on September 3, following a violent altercation. The police responded to a 911 call regarding a stabbing incident between Nizamuddin and his roommate, reportedly over an argument about an air conditioner.

Incident Details: What Happened in Santa Clara

The Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) received a frantic call about a stabbing and swiftly arrived at the scene. They found Nizamuddin allegedly holding a knife and pinning his injured roommate down.

The police instructed both individuals to show their hands. While the roommate complied, Nizamuddin did not, prompting officers to open fire. Reports indicate that four rounds were fired during this confrontation.

Family’s Reaction and Seeking Justice

Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, has reached out to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for assistance in repatriating his son’s remains back to Mahabubnagar. He expressed his distress upon learning of his son’s death on September 18, weeks after the incident.

Hasnuddin emphasized that there was a lack of clarity regarding the police’s decision to shoot his son, stating, “I don’t know the actual reasons why the police shot him.”

Ongoing Investigations and Allegations of Racial Discrimination

The SCPD is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic shooting. Meanwhile, Nizamuddin’s family has raised concerns about potential racial discrimination influencing the police response.

In a viral LinkedIn post prior to the incident, Nizamuddin highlighted his struggles with racial harassment and wage fraud in the U.S., which has put the entire case under scrutiny.

He wrote, “I have been a victim of racial hatred, racial discrimination, racial harassment, torture, wage-fraud, wrongful termination, and obstruction of justice.” These words resonate deeply among his family, who demand a comprehensive investigation from authorities.

The Larger Conversation Around Police Conduct and Safety

This incident raises critical questions about police conduct, especially when responding to domestic disputes. It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to follow strict protocols to ensure the safety of all parties involved.

In recent years, increased scrutiny has been placed on police interactions with people of diverse backgrounds, especially concerning allegations of racial bias. According to a 2021 report from the Pew Research Center, nearly 50% of Black Americans and 60% of Hispanic Americans expressed a belief that police treatment of racial minorities needed significant reform.

Nizamuddin’s tragic death serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for well-regulated responses to confrontations involving law enforcement.
