Authorities arrested Sunit alias “Katua,” a Mathura resident, for allegedly threatening Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The police took action after Sunit issued a life threat through a viral social media video.
In the video, Sunit brandished a pistol and stated he would shoot the Chief Minister by September 25 before taking his own life. He claimed to possess a magazine containing nine bullets, threatening to “fire all nine” if his grievances remained unaddressed.
Sunit alleged he previously filed a complaint at the CM’s office, but claimed no action was taken. This perceived neglect pushed him to make the extreme statement on social media.
Police attempted to apprehend Sunit at his Nagla Hardayal residence on Friday evening. Upon their arrival, he barricaded himself inside, even opening fire from the third floor. The standoff lasted nearly an hour before law enforcement managed to overpower him.
Police seized a pistol and live cartridges upon his arrest. Local residents reported observing Sunit undergoing mental distress, noting that he often laments his personal problems aloud.
The threatening video of Sunit quickly gained traction on various social media platforms, compelling authorities to intervene promptly. Currently, the investigation focuses on how Sunit acquired the firearm and his motivations behind issuing such threats.
The police registered a case against him, charging him with criminal intimidation, attempted incitement to violence, and illegal possession of arms. They are actively pursuing further investigation to uncover more details regarding this alarming incident.
This episode highlights concerns over mental health and public safety, especially concerning threats against prominent political figures. Authorities emphasize the importance of addressing grievances through appropriate channels rather than resorting to violence.
