SRINAGAR, Oct 30: Minister for the Jal Shakti Department, Javed Ahmad Rana, announced today that a policy for the regularization of daily-wagers is currently under review. This statement comes in response to a question raised by Legislator Dr Sajjad Shafi during a session in the Legislative Assembly.
Addressing issues within the department, the Minister highlighted a significant shortage of staff, primarily due to the superannuation of several field employees. Rana elaborated on the staffing situation, noting that only 125 Assistant Linemen are actively engaged, with merely eight lineman posts remaining unfilled in the PHE Sub-Division Uri.
Despite the staffing challenges, the Minister assured that interim measures have been established to ensure a continuous supply of water to residents. He mentioned that the department has implemented internal arrangements utilizing available manpower, which includes both regular employees and daily-wagers. These steps are designed to maintain the operation and upkeep of Water Supply Schemes (WSS) until the vacant positions are filled through formal recruitment, promotions, or redeployments according to departmental guidelines.
The move towards regularizing daily-wagers underlines the government’s commitment to support its workforce and enhance service delivery in water management. This initiative aims to address the long-standing concerns regarding job security for daily-wagers, who play a crucial role in the operational framework of the Jal Shakti Department.
Rana emphasized the importance of resolving staff shortages to improve the quality and reliability of water supply across the region. As the situation evolves, the department remains focused on competency and efficiency, ensuring that no disruption occurs in the essential services provided to the public.
This policy review could significantly impact the livelihoods of daily-wagers, promising stability in an otherwise precarious employment environment. More announcements are expected as discussions continue within the department.
