Kashmir is gearing up for a secure and joyous celebration of Independence Day with multi-layered security measures implemented across the valley. V K Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, emphasized that these arrangements are crucial to ensure a peaceful observance of the national holiday.
On Tuesday, Birdi addressed reporters at the Balidan Stambh after reviewing the security preparations. He confirmed that the Jammu and Kashmir Police has set up comprehensive security protocols not only in Srinagar but also throughout the various districts. “We have put robust security arrangements in place,” he stated, underscoring the police’s readiness to maintain law and order during the celebrations.
Birdi highlighted that security measures extend beyond the event venues. “We have ensured multi-layered security not just at specific locations but in the vicinity surrounding the city as well,” he added, promising a vigilant approach to public safety.
Responding to inquiries regarding recent incidents in Anantnag and Pulwama, Birdi mentioned that investigations are currently active. “It’s ongoing and so, it would not be appropriate for me to disclose that right now,” he stated. However, he assured that updates would be communicated to the public when available.
The police chief encouraged citizens to participate actively in Independence Day events. “This is a public function. The police only act as a helper or organiser in this. We urge people to participate in these functions in large numbers and make them successful,” he remarked, fostering a sense of community and involvement.
On Monday, Birdi convened a security review meeting to assess the preparations for Independence Day celebrations and other important events scheduled across the valley. The meeting included participation from the IG of BSF, IG of CRPF, and other senior officials from allied security agencies.
During the meeting, district police heads reported on local preparations. As a measure of precaution, Birdi instructed officers to enhance area domination and patrolling, particularly in sensitive regions.
Key security operations focus on the main event at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium. Birdi directed that all arrangements must conclude well in advance. “Ensure preparations are completed timely,” stressed the IGP, as he underscored the importance of maintaining security integrity.
In addition, he ordered a reinforcement of security checkpoints, especially during nighttime, at critical locations and along entry and exit routes of the city. He called for strict vigilance against threats to peace, insisting on heightened alertness across different jurisdictions.
As part of the overall security enhancement, police forces have initiated surprise checks and frisking operations in key areas including Lal Chowk. These measures aim to instill confidence among citizens and deter potential disturbances.
