GMC Doda NICU Manages One of the Heaviest Newborns

In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College Doda has successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This remarkable case marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution.

The baby, born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, was delivered to a diabetic mother and faced severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. The medical team swiftly recognized the critical condition, leading to the immediate admission of the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and meticulous monitoring.

Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and clear signs of respiratory compromise, specialized neonatal respiratory support was promptly initiated. Medical professionals closely monitored the infant’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Thankfully, the infant showed positive responses over the next several days, which allowed for the gradual reduction of respiratory support.

In the last 72 hours leading to discharge, the baby successfully maintained stable independent breathing, regular oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. Notably, the newborn experienced no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the health care team discharged the newborn in excellent condition, with follow-up care scheduled.

The successful management of this challenging case resulted from the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Pediatrics Department, and the overall supervision of faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. The dedicated team of senior and junior residents played a vital role in this achievement.

Special recognition goes to the nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda for their vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and unwavering commitment, which were essential to the baby’s recovery. Their tireless efforts reflect the high standard of care provided at the facility.

This remarkable achievement underscores the increasing neonatal expertise and teamwork within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It highlights the institution’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region.
