In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda managed a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This significant milestone occurred on 25th October 2025, when the baby, delivered to a diabetic mother, faced severe respiratory distress shortly after birth.
The baby arrived at GMC Doda at 1:20 PM, requiring immediate attention due to its critical condition. Doctors promptly admitted the infant to the NICU for comprehensive management and monitoring. Given the newborn’s large size and respiratory compromise, the medical team implemented specialized neonatal respiratory support.
Throughout the first few days, healthcare professionals monitored the infant’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity closely. This diligent care paid off, as the baby responded positively, enabling the gradual weaning off factors like respiratory support.
In the final 72 hours before discharge, the newborn exhibited stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. The absence of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation bolstered the team’s confidence in discharging the baby in a healthy condition, with routine follow-up appointments recommended.
This successful case was orchestrated under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Pediatrics Department.
