In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Government Medical College Doda successfully managed a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth, one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. The infant was born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother and required immediate medical attention due to severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes after delivery.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, doctors swiftly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management. Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and notable signs of respiratory compromise, specialized neonatal respiratory support was initiated right away. The medical team closely monitored the infant’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity.
Over the next several days, the baby responded positively to treatment, allowing for the gradual weaning of respiratory support. Remarkably, during the final 72 hours before discharge, the newborn maintained steady independent breathing, normal oxygen levels, and stable body temperature, showing no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After achieving sustained clinical stability, the baby was discharged in good health, with a routine follow-up advised.
The successful management of this delicate case occurred under the vigilant guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, alongside faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. The recovery journey also owed much to the dedicated team of senior and junior residents who provided round-the-clock care.
