Sarfaraz Khan Joins Team India Ahead of 1st Sri Lanka Test

Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan has officially joined the Team India camp ahead of the first Test match against Sri Lanka, set to begin on August 15 at the picturesque Galle International Stadium. Sarfaraz replaces the injured Sai Sudharsan in a crucial moment for the team.

The first Test of the two-match series marks an important opportunity for India to regain momentum in the World Test Championship. Sarfaraz expressed his excitement by sharing a selfie in Indian colours on his Instagram, showcasing a lean physique achieved through dedication to fitness.

Last seen in action for India against New Zealand in November 2024, Sarfaraz played a vital role in a series that saw the team face unprecedented challenges, including a whitewash defeat—a first for India at home in over a decade. Earlier that year, he debuted against England, marking significant milestones in his career.

Despite being named in the squad for India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia (2024-25), Sarfaraz did not get the chance to play. In his six Tests, he accumulated 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including a century and three fifties, with a personal best of 150.

Sarfaraz’s selection comes on the back of an impressive domestic season. He scored 429 runs in seven Ranji Trophy matches at an average of 53.62, with one century and a fifty. His dominant form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy highlights his versatility; he made 329 runs in seven innings at an astonishing average of 65.80.

His consistent performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy added accolades to his name, where he amassed 303 runs in six matches, boasting an impressive average of 75.75. Sarfaraz’s outstanding display of talent earned him a contract with Chennai Super Kings for ₹75 lakh.

Additionally, his stint with the Mumbai T20 League’s Aakash Tigers MWS reaffirmed his status as a rising star; he scored 161 runs in five innings, averaging 32.20, with a strike rate surpassing 214.

As India heads into this pivotal series, the team stands fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having recorded four wins and four losses out of nine matches, reflecting a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.

The updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka includes: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan.
