The Uttar Pradesh government officially handed over the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) final report in the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft case to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Teerth Kshetra Trust on Tuesday. This decision came after the SIT conducted a thorough inquiry into the alleged theft of donations from the prominent temple.
The case has attracted significant public and media attention, considering the temple’s religious significance and the substantial funds involved. The reconstitution of the SIT aimed to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the embezzlement claims surrounding the temple’s offerings.
The reformed SIT includes three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, spearheaded by Inspector General Kiran S. Other members include Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Ayodhya Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ayodhya Dr. Gaurav Grover. This new team replaced the original SIT, which had been formed earlier and comprised officials such as Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar.
On the preceding day, the Supreme Court stated that the SIT’s status report submitted by the Uttar Pradesh government regarding financial irregularities cannot be disclosed to petitioners or other parties at this point. Nevertheless, the Court allowed petitioners and socially responsible individuals to submit suggestions related to the investigation to the office of the Solicitor General. The Solicitor General will present these recommendations to the SIT.
The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, directed the newly formed SIT to deliver a detailed status report on the next scheduled hearing. The alleged multi-lakh rupee donation fraud involved accusations of calculated theft of offerings committed by both temple employees and bank officials.
Following the ongoing investigation, authorities have arrested eight individuals tied to the case, including Avinash Shukla, Ankalp Mishra, and Manish Kumar Yadav, among others. They face judicial remand as investigations move forward.
The first information report (FIR) was lodged on June 25 at the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station. It was based on a complaint from Krishanmohan, a trustee of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The complaint outlines a conspiracy involving temple staff who manage the counting and handling of donations, alleging systematic theft and misappropriation.
The ramifications of these alleged irregularities extend beyond legal battles, igniting political tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and opposition parties. The issue has raised demands for accountability at higher levels while the investigation continues to unfold, intensifying the public discourse regarding trust and responsibility in managing temple finances.
The case remains active, as investigators scrutinize the serious accusations of donation fund misappropriation. With all signs pointing to a systematic operation of theft, the implications of this investigation impact not only the temple’s reputation but also reflect broader concerns regarding governance and transparency.
