Uttar Pradesh Hands Over SIT Report in Ayodhya Temple Theft Case

The Uttar Pradesh Home Department delivered the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) final report on the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Teerth Kshetra Trust on Tuesday. This critical development raises significant questions about accountability and transparency in the management of funds collected at one of India’s most prominent religious sites.

The SIT’s report comes following extensive investigations into alleged embezzlement linked to the temple’s donations. This case has garnered massive media attention due to the temple’s sacred status and the involvement of temple staff and banking employees in the alleged theft.

As part of the investigation, the Uttar Pradesh government restructured the SIT, which now includes three senior IPS officers: IG Kiran S, DIG Ayodhya Somen Verma, and SSP Ayodhya Dr. Gaurav Grover. This reconstitution signifies the state’s commitment to resolving this high-profile case effectively. Previously, the SIT included Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ruled that the SIT’s status report cannot be shared with petitioners or others at this stage, emphasizing the sensitivity of the ongoing inquiry. However, the Court allowed concerned citizens to submit suggestions regarding the investigation process to the Office of the Solicitor General, which could forward them to the SIT for review.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant requested the SIT to provide an updated status report during the next hearing. The temple donation fraud, reportedly worth several lakh rupees, has raised alarms and prompted demands for thorough investigations into financial irregularities.

Authorities have arrested eight suspects in connection with the theft, including Avinash Shukla, Ankalp Mishra, and Lavkush Mishra, who are now in judicial remand. An FIR was lodged on June 25 at Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station after Krishanmohan, a trust member, reported systematic theft and misappropriation involving temple staff managing donations.

These allegations have intensified political debates, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party facing scrutiny from the Opposition for perceived lapses in financial governance. The allegations against temple staff managing donation counting have sparked tensions around accountability within the temple administration.

The Uttar Pradesh government continues to face pressure to deliver transparency regarding decisions surrounding the controversial donation management. As investigations progress, the conflict between political factions illustrates the complex dynamics between governance and faith in public institutions.

As the SIT examines the allegations surrounding donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, the public seeks assurance that justice will prevail in what is or has become a focal point of political discourse in India.
