Centre Redesigns PRASAD Scheme to Enhance Pilgrim Tourism

The Union Government is actively redesigning the PRASAD scheme (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) to boost pilgrim tourism across India, Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed the Lok Sabha on Monday. This initiative aims to enhance spiritual and cultural experiences for pilgrims visiting major holy sites.

During the Question Hour, Shekhawat highlighted that the government has sanctioned 54 projects under the PRASAD scheme in the last ten years. The minister emphasized that the original structure of the scheme, aligned with a specific financial cycle, is now nearing completion, prompting the Ministry to undertake a comprehensive redesign.

The redesign aims to strengthen and upgrade the PRASAD programme to better serve the needs of both pilgrims and the tourism sector. This move reflects the government’s commitment to rejuvenate India’s significant pilgrimage sites and improve the overall tourist experience.

Insights on the PRASAD Scheme

Launched in the 2014–15 fiscal year, the PRASAD scheme focuses on the development, beautification, and rejuvenation of major pilgrimage sites throughout India. This initiative has garnered attention for its potential to not only uplift spiritual destinations but also enhance local economies through increased tourist interest.

The primary objectives of the PRASAD scheme include:

  • Enhancing tourist infrastructure to accommodate the influx of visitors,
  • Improving facilities and accessibility at pilgrimage destinations,
  • Providing a better overall experience for pilgrims and visitors alike.

The government’s redesign comes in response to feedback and evolving tourism trends, aimed at integrating pilgrimage destinations more effectively into the broader tourism ecosystem. This strategic approach not only seeks to revitalize the spiritual experience but also to attract a greater number of domestic and international tourists.

Officials are optimistic that the enhanced PRASAD scheme will increase annual footfalls at pilgrimage sites, foster local economies, and create sustainable tourism models. The government plans to integrate modern amenities while preserving the cultural heritage and spiritual essence of these destinations.

According to preliminary reports, the pilgrimage tourism sector has significant potential for growth. Recent statistics suggest that pilgrimage tourism contributes substantially to the Indian economy. In the past decade, sites under the PRASAD scheme have seen increased visitor numbers, further emphasizing the need to improve infrastructure and amenities.

With the redesign underway, there is a growing anticipation among stakeholders in the tourism sector. Pilgrim tourism not only promotes religious and cultural values but also offers economic benefits through livelihood generation in local communities.

The PRASAD scheme’s redesign is a vital step towards enhancing the spiritual journey of millions of pilgrims visiting India’s sacred sites. Stakeholders hope that with updated strategies and improved facilities, the scheme will pave the way for a more vibrant and engaging pilgrimage experience.
