Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra has called for a judicial probe into the Leh violence of September 24, which claimed four lives. He stressed that the inquiry must be conducted by either a sitting High Court judge or a reputable retired judge if necessary.
Karra addressed reporters on Thursday, stating, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” This statement underscores his commitment to ensuring justice and accountability following the tragic incident.
In his remarks, Karra also expressed his respect for the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, while commemorating their birth anniversaries. He noted, “Their leadership, ideology, and commitment to a self-reliant India remain relevant today.” He emphasized that Gandhian philosophy continues to inspire nations globally, even being acknowledged at the United Nations.
Looking ahead, Karra addressed the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. He stated that the decisions on seat sharing and tactical alliances will be made by the Congress leadership at the central level. He highlighted that senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has already been named as an observer for these elections, indicating strategic planning by the party.
Additionally, Karra supported Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, calling for his authorization to attend the Assembly session. He argued, “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed.” His comments reflect an ongoing commitment to democratic practices and the rights of elected representatives.
The demand for a judicial inquiry into the Leh violence highlights a crucial aspect of political responsibility in Jammu and Kashmir. The incidents of violence have raised concerns among the public and political figures alike, leading to calls for transparency and justice. Ensuring an impartial investigation could reinforce public trust in governmental institutions.
The Jammu and Kashmir region has seen varied violence over the years, making the need for oversight more urgent. A judicial inquiry, especially one led by a respected figure, could not only provide answers but also offer reassurance to citizens desiring peace and stability.
