Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has triggered a massive landslide in Himachal Pradesh, isolating the Pangi Valley from the rest of the state. The incident occurred along the Sansari–Kullu–Manali road at the border of Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti districts, where a 60-metre stretch of the road has completely washed away, rendering the area inaccessible.
Approximately 40 to 50 individuals, traveling in private vehicles and taxis, now find themselves stranded at Sugalwas and Kadu Nullah. Many had to endure extreme cold conditions overnight, highlighting the urgency of restoration efforts. Eyewitnesses reported that the landslide was so severe that it completely obliterated the hillside, leaving no trace of the road.
One local resident shared, “The slide was so powerful that we had to flee the area as rocks and debris rained down around us. Movement is now impossible, even on foot.” Authorities have begun relocating some of the stranded individuals to safer locations as restoration operations commence.
The Border Roads Organisation has started efforts to re-establish connectivity to the cut-off valley. They are deploying heavy machinery to clear debris and repair the damaged road. Local officials emphasize the importance of restoring access to the isolated community, which heavily relies on this route for essential supplies and services.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued multiple weather alerts in light of continued adverse conditions. An Orange Alert warns of potential hailstorms, thunderstorms, and strong winds ranging from 40 to 60 km/h in districts including Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Solan. These conditions pose significant risks, particularly for those traveling in the region.
A Yellow Alert follows, anticipating similar disruptive weather scenarios in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Sirmaur. Weather forecasts suggest that the prolonged wet spell could last until April 13, with potential complications related to landslides and flash floods.
The rainfall has wreaked havoc across Himachal Pradesh, as Sarahan recorded the highest rainfall with 38.5 mm, and reports of hail damaging crops have surfaced in parts of Shimla district. Higher elevations may experience snowfall, adding yet another layer of complexity to the already challenging weather patterns.
As conditions continue to deteriorate, cold temperatures have intensified across the state. Kalpa and Kukumseri experienced low temperatures of 0.4°C, while many regions recorded day temperatures 3 to 9°C below normal.
The unusual weather conditions this week are attributed to a Western Disturbance, with another weather system predicted to impact the region starting April 11. Local meteorologists urge residents and travelers to remain vigilant and heed advice to steer clear of roads vulnerable to landslides.
