A severe landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has cut off the remote Pangi Valley, isolating the region from the rest of the state. The landslide struck the Sansari–Kullu–Manali road that connects Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti districts on April 10, 2023. Following the incident, the 60-metre section of the road vanished, leaving travelers stranded.
Approximately 40-50 individuals found themselves marooned amidst the chaos at Sugalwas and Kadu Nullah. Many were forced to endure freezing temperatures overnight, highlighting the harsh conditions prevailing in the aftermath of the landslide.
“The hillsides came crashing down. There’s no sign of the road; it’s impossible to move, even on foot,” reported an eyewitness, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
In response to the crisis, local authorities acted swiftly to transport the stranded individuals to safer locations, ensuring their well-being in the face of adversity.
Restoration Work Commences
The Border Roads Organisation has initiated restoration efforts on the Sansari–Kullu–Manali road. Crews work around the clock to clear debris and restore connectivity to the isolated Pangi Valley.
Weather conditions across Himachal Pradesh remain volatile. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for districts such as Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Solan, warning of imminent hailstorms, thunderstorms, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-60 kmph. A yellow alert has been issued for areas including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Sirmaur, where similar weather conditions are expected.
Forecasts suggest a prolonged wet spell, with heavy rains expected to last until April 13, 2023, an essential consideration for local residents.
Impact of Severe Weather
Rainfall totals have varied widely across the state, with Sarahan reporting the highest at 38.5 mm. The damaging effects extend to agricultural lands, with hailstorms in parts of Shimla district leading to considerable crop damage. Additionally, snowfall is possible in higher elevations, casting further uncertainties for those reliant on agriculture.
As temperatures drop significantly, Kalpa and Kukumseri recorded lows of 0.4°C, with day temperatures in many regions ranging from 3 to 9 degrees below normal.
The ongoing wet conditions link to a Western Disturbance that is set to affect the region with yet another system expected to arrive on April 11, 2023. This sequential series of weather disturbances increases risks for landslides and further disruptions.
