The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon is poised to enter North Bengal’s sub-Himalayan regions, specifically Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This forecast arrives as northern districts like Jalpaiguri already experience pre-monsoon rains.
Weather conditions are currently ideal for the southwest monsoon’s progress into the sub-Himalayan areas, even though it is set to miss its typical entry date of June 6. According to the IMD bulletin, heavy downpours are expected in these districts as the atmosphere remains humid across southern Bengal, despite rainfall in some locations.
The IMD warned of significantly heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan districts—particularly Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar—over the next two days. Residents should prepare for potential disruption due to this predicted weather activity.
In the past 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM on Monday, Alipurduar, which borders Assam, reported the highest rainfall in West Bengal at 133 mm. Other districts noted varying amounts of rainfall: Jalpaiguri received 53 mm, Cooch Behar recorded 18 mm, while Darjeeling and Kalimpong saw lighter showers of 7.8 mm and 19 mm, respectively.
The anticipated arrival of the monsoon will bring much-needed relief to agricultural activities in the region. Farmers in these districts look forward to the rains that replenish soil moisture and improve crop yields. The IMD has emphasized the importance of these rains, stating, “The advancement of the monsoon not only affects local weather but also contributes to the agricultural vitality of the region.”
