PDP Leader Waheed Para Condemns Giriraj Singh’s Remarks

PDP leader Waheed Para condemned Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Wednesday for labeling former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti as a ‘terrorist’. Para described Singh’s comments as ‘outrageous’ and ‘irresponsible’, highlighting the inflammatory nature of such remarks.

In a post on X, Para stated, ‘Giriraj Singh’s remarks calling PDP president Mehbooba Mufti a ‘terrorist’ are beneath the dignity of a Union Minister.’ He emphasized that such language not only reflects political intolerance but also a disturbing prejudice against a prominent Muslim leader.

Singh sparked controversy by asserting, ‘Mehbooba Mufti has always supported terrorists and thus deserves to be labeled accordingly.’ He added that the BJP’s attempts to reform Mufti during the coalition government with the PDP were ultimately unsuccessful, leading to her party’s separation.

Para responded fiercely to Singh’s claims, asserting that the remarks were less about political discourse and more an indicator of Singh’s own mindset. ‘This is not a political statement; it is a reflection of Giriraj Singh’s own mindset,’ Para stressed, questioning the integrity of the comments from a high-ranking official.

Specifically, the PDP chief, Mufti, found herself in the spotlight earlier this week when controversy erupted after a protest against the abrogation of Article 370, during which she was seen holding the national flag upside down. This act was a symbolic expression of dissent against the central government’s policies regarding Jammu and Kashmir.

Para reinforced that political leaders must exercise caution and responsibility in their statements, particularly in a diverse and complex political landscape like Jammu and Kashmir. He called for a more respectful discourse that acknowledges the sensitivities of the region.

The situation underscores the ongoing tensions within Indian politics, especially in relation to issues of national identity and regional autonomy. Scholar and political analyst Dr. Nidhi Malik weighed in, stating, ‘The rhetoric used by politicians can escalate tensions, diverting attention from substantive policy discussions.’

In an environment where political narratives shape public perception, leaders from all parties need to engage with each other in a manner that promotes dialogue rather than division. Public figures must remember their words carry weight, especially concerning figures recognized for their substantial contributions to the region.

As PDP leaders prepare to respond and bolster their support base, the upcoming political developments in Jammu and Kashmir will likely center around the interplay of rhetoric and realities on the ground.
