President Donald Trump has officially paused “Project Freedom,” aimed at escorting ships through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. He cited significant advancements in negotiations with Iran towards finalizing a peace agreement. This development comes as tensions continue to simmer in the region.
In a post shared on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump stated, “Great progress has been made toward a complete and final agreement with representatives of Iran.” The President emphasized the importance of collaboration with other nations, including Pakistan, while noting recent military successes against Iran.
The decision to suspend Project Freedom comes shortly after its launch on Monday. The initiative aimed to assist vessels facing danger due to the current geopolitical climate in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route that facilitates the transport of approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies.
Trump detailed in his statement that the “Blockade will remain in full force and effect,” but the movement of ships would be paused to allow for the potential finalization of an agreement. Concerns regarding maritime safety had escalated, particularly after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reported attacks on its ships allegedly carried out by Iranian forces. In response, the United States had claimed that it destroyed numerous Iranian boats.
Hours before Trump’s announcement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a statement confirming the conclusion of Operation Epic Fury, which was initiated on February 28 to counteract threats from Iran. Rubio emphasized, “We achieved the objectives of that operation. We would prefer the path of peace.”
The Pentagon recently classified Operation Epic Fury as successful, indicating that it fulfilled its intended targets without further escalation. Rubio also added that while the goal of Project Freedom was largely humanitarian, the mission entailed rescuing nearly 23,000 civilians from 87 different countries who were trapped in the Persian Gulf due to Iranian hostilities.
He underscored the operation’s defensive nature, asserting, “This is not an offensive operation. This is a defensive operation, and what that means is very simple: there’s no shooting unless we’re shot at first.” Rubio reasserted the commitment of the United States to respond decisively to any attacks posed against ships or personnel in the region.
