KL Rahul Praises Galle Wicket After India’s 165-Run Victory

In a thrilling encounter at Galle, India secured a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test match, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Post-match, Indian batter KL Rahul hailed the quality of the pitch, describing the contest as a “great Test match” that offered a level playing field for both batters and bowlers throughout the five days.

Standout performances marked the match, particularly from Indian all-rounder Manav Suthar. Making a significant impact in only his second Test, Suthar delivered a remarkable 10-wicket haul, helping India bowl out Sri Lanka for just 206 runs. Earlier, Devdutt Padikkal set the tone with a stellar innings of 167, earning him the coveted Player of the Match award.

KL Rahul commended the Galle wicket for maintaining a competitive edge, providing benefits for spinners while allowing proficient batters to score. He referred to Sonal Dinusha from Sri Lanka, whose efforts included a century and an impressive 84 in his second batting, showcasing how the pitch rewarded gritty play.

“I think it was a great Test match. The wicket played really well throughout the five days. There was something for spinners, but the batters who applied themselves could get runs too,” Rahul said. He marked Dinusha’s gameplay as exemplary, highlighting the strategic approach of engaging spinners effectively.

Right after India’s victory, rain descended on Galle. Rahul expressed relief over the timing of their win, particularly with dark clouds looming overhead. The team’s strategy focused on taking swift wickets to avoid a rain-impacted loss.

“Just relieved, honestly! We kept looking at the clouds. We knew there was a big shower coming, so we didn’t want to delay the game. Breaking the key partnership gave us the confidence to wrap up Sri Lanka’s tail easily,” he stated.

India dominated by posting 464 in their first innings, largely thanks to Padikkal’s heroic knock. Rahul contributed a solid 82, setting a tough target of 372 for Sri Lanka. Despite fighting bravely, Sri Lanka fell short after resuming Day 5 at 84/4, as Suthar’s spell proved too difficult to negotiate.

On Day 5, Sri Lanka began their innings with resistance from Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva, who added 95 runs for the fifth wicket. However, once Jadeja dismissed Dhananjaya for 59, India seized control of the match. Despite Dinusha’s valiant efforts, scoring 84, Suthar dismantled the defense, sealing the victory with three crucial wickets in one over.

With this victory, India aims to bolster its confidence ahead of the final Test. A continued focus on strategic gameplay will be pivotal as the team looks to polish its skills on the challenging pitches of Sri Lanka.
