Omar Abdullah Welcomes US Ambassador; Dismisses Foreign Intervention

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, on Wednesday during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue but firmly stated that regional governance matters are strictly domestic concerns.

During the high-profile diplomatic visit, Abdullah clarified, “After a long time, a US Ambassador is visiting Jammu & Kashmir. We will speak with him. I would like to hear him.” His comments highlighted the significance of the visit while drawing clear boundaries regarding foreign involvement in local affairs.

Abdullah set definitive parameters for his discussions with the ambassador, ensuring that external entities have no jurisdiction over local issues. He asserted, “Our problems are not his concern. It is not my habit to complain about our issues to the ambassador of another country. Our problems will not be resolved by Washington but by our own government.” This statement reinforces the stance that regional issues should remain within national boundaries.

The Chief Minister also addressed pressing concerns about infrastructure in Srinagar, particularly the persistent issue of waterlogging during heavy rains. He acknowledged that this challenge is a legacy problem linked to inadequate urban planning over several years.

“Waterlogging in parts of Srinagar is a legacy issue. It’s not the creation of the last two years, not even the last five years. Neither you nor I know who gave permission to build colonies without providing drainage. Now, retrospectively, we are creating drainage in these colonies,” he explained. Abdullah mentioned that the administration has identified problematic areas and is taking necessary measures to mitigate flooding risks.

When discussing how the state government responds to weather warnings, Abdullah noted the importance of preparedness. “When we receive warnings from the Met Department, we arrange additional pumpage,” he said, underscoring the government’s commitment to address the challenges faced by the residents of Srinagar.

As the interaction between Omar Abdullah and the US Ambassador to India unfolds, it remains to be seen how this visit will influence discussions around Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah’s firm stance on regional governance reinforces the necessity for local solutions to local problems.
