GOPESHWAR/DEHRADUN: The tragic death toll from the Chamoli tunnel accident in Uttarakhand reached nine on Tuesday, as search operations uncovered another body of a missing worker. This catastrophic incident occurred on August 13, when a landslide obstructed the tunnel, leading to a deadly accumulation of debris and water.
Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer NK Joshi confirmed the recovery of the body during ongoing rescue operations. The remains have been sent to Gopeshwar District Hospital for identification, as search teams continue their efforts to locate a final missing worker.
The rescue operation involves multiple agencies working in unison, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), alongside local police. With twelve other workers suffering injuries in the accident, the joint teams are focused on urgently recovering the remaining worker.
Complications arising from significant sludge inside the tunnel hamper the rescue operations. Rescue teams face difficult conditions, as they continuously battle against debris obstructing their path. Despite these challenges, officials remain committed to locating the last missing individual.
Authorities report that teams use suction pumps and specialized equipment to remove the accumulated sludge and rapidly drain excess water. Officials emphasize the critical nature of the search, which takes place under adverse conditions that heighten the dangers faced by rescue personnel.
Chamoli District Information Officer Dheeraj Karki informed PTI that significant progress has been made, with three out of five JCB machines that were trapped within the three-kilometre-long tunnel successfully retrieved. This retrieval accelerates the operation aimed at recovering the remaining trapped workers.
Officials are optimistic that the remaining two JCB machines will be extracted soon, allowing operations to continue effectively. The dedication of all rescue teams remains evident, as they work tirelessly to confront the hazardous situation to prevent further loss of life.
The urgency surrounding this rescue operation highlights the grave consequences of natural disasters like landslides in tunnel construction areas. Locals and officials alike reflect on the tragedy, urging systemic improvements in safety measures for future projects.
As the recovery efforts persist, the region keeps close watch on the developments. Community support for the affected families grows, as they grapple with the devastating loss and seek answers for the unexpected tragedy.
